If You may want to copy the link below and print the 9th grade Reading TAKS study guide.  The main parts you would to complete are the focused study skills.  Each skill builds stamina and knowledge to further help by objective and expectation.  To focus on objectives 1&2, I strongly recommend students do the following for each selection YOU read:

Step 1: Read the story for fun

*write the writer's purpose
*write the lesson taught
*identify the diversity
*identify the characters and change
*identify the setting and change
*identify the mood/tone and change
*identify the conflict and individuals involved
*identify the falling action
*identify the resolution

Step 2: In-depth analysis
*Do the following for each paragraph:
--write the main idea
--write a summarizing sentence
--circle descriptive words about the character(s)
--circle descriptive words about the setting
--circle active verbs
--box the focus word in each paragraph

Step 3: Universal Thought
*Write a short paragraph detailing the value and importance of the selection.  What do we learn about this culture and what do the the characters teach us?
