Civil Wars in the Former Yugoslavia

Students can use EdView or other search engines to do a search of their local town or city to see if there are any organizations that may have first-hand experiences with relief efforts in Bosnia or Kosovo. If so, students can interview people who have been involved in these efforts. Students can use a digital camcorder to film the interview and use iMovie to create a desktop movie. The interviews can be shown or presented in class as a current event follow-up to the historical presentations.

Our Community in the 20th Century

Students can record their interviews with local seniors and older family members with a digital camcorder and use iMovie to create desktop movies of the interviews. These movies can be shown to the whole class at the conclusion of this project. Or, if the timelines are shown as slideshows, the movies can be included on certain slides.

Down to Business

Students can use a digital camcorder and iMovie to make desktop movies of themselves doing an activity to include on their Resume Web site.

Students can take turns holding mock interviews which can be filmed with a digital camcorder, edited with iMovie, and then added to each student's Web site.

Green Economics

As part of their marketing materials, students can create a TV ad, which can be filmed and then edited with iMovie. The ad can be shown as part of their presentation in Phase 4 of the project.

Multicultural Travel

Students can interview other students who are posing as former trip participants and giving testimonials about their experiences. The interviews can be recorded with a digital camcorder, edited with iMovie, and then added as desktop movies to the group presentations.

In My Own iMovie

When all the groups are ready, have each group stage its performance and record it using the digital camcorder. Groups then use iMovie to edit their digital video and create professional-looking desktop movies.

The movies can be shown to the class and then published on the Internet using an iTools theater template.

On the Home Front

If a digital camcorder is available, students may want to record their interviews and edit them with iMovie to create desktop movies that can be used in a variety of ways:

  • Movies can be presented to the class during Phase 4 to spur additional discussion, or as part of the panel presentations in Phase 3.
  • Movies of interviews can be published on the Internet, using an Apple iTools account and the School Events template for the Web site.
  • Movies can be shown to other classes in your school or to members of the community.

Paths of Public Policy

To enhance the simulations they create in Phase 3, students can create desktop movies, using a digital camcorder and iMovie, that illustrate some aspect of their scenarios. A group could, for example, create a movie for the beginning slide of a simulation that explores a drought scenario by recording scenes of dried-up local reservoirs, wilting plants, and water taps that deliver no water when turned on. For other types of simulations, students could create scale-model scenes, or record each other acting out parts in appropriate costumes.

A Story Too Simple?

Groups can produce their scenes as desktop movies, using a digital camcorder and iMovie. Each movie begins with a "chorus" (as in Romeo and Juliet) explaining the whole subplot, the location in the play in which the scene fits, and how the scene works in the subplot. The completed iMovies can be published on the Internet for easy viewing by students, family members, and members of the school community.

Or, when students are done editing their movies in iMovie, they can copy the movies back to the digital camcorder, connect the camcorder to a VCR, and then copy the movies to a videotape. The videotapes can then be taken home for viewing with family members.

Web Ballads

If a digital camcorder is available, students can be recorded reading (or singing) their ballads, and the video files can be edited with iMovie to make desktop movies that can be included on the ballad Web site.

Wise Words

A digital camcorder and iMovie can be combined to create compelling desktop movies to place on the mPOWER slides. For example, students can record a person acting out the action of a verb. In addition, a group could create a desktop movie of a skit that features dialogue made up mostly of words from the group's list, and then they could place this movie on a slide that concludes the presentation.
